Simple Acts of Self Care for Muva this Fall

IT’S DAT SZN! City Girls Voice

Hot Cocoa, oversized sweaters, cozy blankets and cuddling. Fall is here! Which means it’s my birthday season, but, more than anything Fall is a time of introspection. As the leaves fall I wonder what parts of me I need to shed. It’s the season of harvest, so where have I been laying my seeds? It’s a time of change and transition. It’s time to slow down, rest, and pour into the things that I’m called to. Introspection and reflection is taking care of yourself.

Tis’ the season for self care, because you deserve it, no matter where you are in your life. Working woman? You deserve. Anxiety-ridden? You definitely deserve. Unemployed? You deserve. Stay at Home Mom? Soul Searching? Exhausted? WE ALL DAMN DESERVE! We hear the buzz words “self care” all the time, but I promise you, it’s not what you think. I’ve grown to truly honor myself in ways that mostly DON’T require any money, and THAT is what self care truly is. For me, it’s moments of solace; picking up a new read, massaging myself in my favorite butter, drawing a hot bath (add bath salts please!). Starting my day a little earlier to take my time. Make some tea, pray, meditate or journal before you start or end your day.

I always ask Mamas what they do for self care. Or, “How do you tend to yourself?” 90% of the time the response is “I don’t have time”. Listen sis, starting today, YOU GOT TIME! And if you don’t, I’m holding you responsible to make time. It’s bad enough we’re always on go-mode. I love to remind mamas that you can’t pour from an empty cup! You deserve a self care ritual, whatever that looks like for you.

We prioritize so much as it is. Relationships, jobs (we don’t even like), boys *eye roll*, need I say more? How much of your time do you spend on things that don’t benefit you or your quality of life?

Do you love on yourself as much as you love others? When’s the last time you scheduled Quiet Time? When’s the last time you said NO?

Are your life’s desires in alignment with your work ethic? How often do you give yourself praise and celebrate your accomplishments?

Okay, I’m done gathering ya’ll for now lol. Here are some simple ways to cater to yourself this fall.

Think practicality sis. Don’t overdue it!

Some of my favorite ways to take care of me, especially during Fall season is:

  • Bundle up and take a walk! It’s something about that crisp cool air hits different in the Fall. It’s my favorite air to inhale.

  • BREATHE. Do not sleep on breathing. It sounds crazy, but once I started yoga I learned how much I take breath for granted. It’s grounding and it slows you down. (Every mama needs that)

  • Essential oils! They have soooo many health and healing benefits. You can add a few drops to your bath water, add them to your favorite body butter, or an oil diffuser.

  • Speaking of a diffuser, an essential oil diffuser is a must-have. I got my first one from Walmart on a spontaneous trip. It was easy to use and price friendly! I’ve enjoyed blending different oils based on my mood or what I feel like I need (grounding, focus, sleep). Some of my favorite blends: Peppermint x Orange in the morning, Lavender x Lemongrass after my shower!

  • BE PRESENT. One of my sister-moms recently reminded me to be present in my thoughts and feelings. To honor my process (even when it ain’t cute). We have to work on focusing on one thing at a time, feel the feels, and let it pass.

  • Make a DIY healing corner or space for you to pray, meditate, journal . Use Pinterest or Follow IG hashtags for inspo! I take advantage of my healing space when I rise in the morning (before waking the little one) to set the tone for my day or when she’s down at night.

  • Stock up on herbal tea. Simple things like making a cup of tea really forces you to take your time. (Do you notice a theme here? SLOW DOWN MAMA)

  • STAY MOISTURIZED! As the temperatures drop and air becomes drier, our skin and hair becomes extremely vulnerable. This is the time you want to lock in moisture when doing your protective styles and oiling up after bath and shower time. I’m currently infatuated with the full Coconut Shea Collection by Eden BodyWorks! I currently have in rotation the Coconut Shea Moisture Shampoo, Cleansing Cowash, and the Curl Defining Creme. I just got put on to a new body butter called Cultured Naturals and MY GAWD it’s amazing (and black owned). It’s a solid #2 to Zen in A Jar.

  • Keep the red wine stocked! My new fave app, Drizly comes through clutch when I don’t feel like leaving the house for a wine-run! This cool alcohol delivery service will come through especially on the colder days!

  • Grab yourself a heated or weighted blanket! My cold-single-nights aren’t so cold with my blanket lol!

  • Read a few pages a day of a new book. My go-to book right now is The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz! I’ve reread it 100 times. Yes, it’s that good.

There’s no one way to get self-care right. Do what feels comfortable for you this Fall and let me know how it goes!
