Skin Care, My Way
I’ve always been the girl with insecurities surrounding my skin as a teenager and in my early 20’s. What I didn’t realize, is that it’s something that I had control of if I had prioritized skin care as much as I did getting my nails done every two weeks! This skin care regimen has helped minimize my oily skin, smooth out my pores and control breakouts. The BIGGEST key is to add more water in your day-to-day life. If you think you drink enough water, drink MORE! The second key is consistency. The only way to see results is to keep it up! As you can see above, I still have dark marks (that’s my next task). Keep in mind, this regimen may not work for you depending on your skin type. It’s recommended that if you don’t see change in about 4-6 weeks seeing a dermatologist may be best for you.
My Skin Type
A lot of taking control to my skin was identifying what type of skin I actually have. My t-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and my cheeks are oily with extremely large pores. Oddly enough, I have dry areas on my skin as well but overall, I have oily skin. My pores are visibly large, but with the consistency of my skincare routine they have smoothed out some. I’d like them to shrink but I don’t know if that’s a thing. :/
There’s Power in Products
I was going in to this skin care thing basically with blind eyes, so a friend of mine introduced me to a few products that have helped her overcome her oily skin (shout out to you girl!). These are the products that she said worked for her, and they’ve worked wonders for me!
Burt’s Bees- Deep Cleansing Cream: This product is a great product for morning and evening face wash. It leaves my skin feeling moisturized, and stripped of oil. Also the Soap Bark & Chamomile scent is BOMB!
Burt’s Bees- Deep Pore Scrub: For the most part I use the pore scrub on days that I wear makeup. I’ll use my makeup wipes and follow up with this. This has truly been a savior in my regimen because I have HUGE pores and I’ve literally watched them get smooth out since I’ve been using this product.
Shea Moisture African Black Soap Balancing Moisturizer: Moisturizer is SO important! It reduces skin problems and keeps your skin from getting too oily or too dry. This product in particular is for blemish prone skin (ME! Hello pimple, meet face) so do your research when choosing a moisturizer.
Lemongrass oil: Aside from my face smelling like citrusy lemon zest, oil has helped replenish my skin with it’s natural oils. Crazy right? If you have oily skin like me, using an oil can keep the oil levels in your skin balanced. GOOGLE IT (lol). And according to Bustle.com, lemongrass oil is the best natural skin toner! So it’s a two-in-one winner :) Side note- You MUST use a carrier oil like: olive oil or coconut oil to mix any essential oil with, unless you want to burn your face off. You don’t want that, I’ve done it.
Aveeno SPF 30- I know, I know, “black people don’t need sunscreen, we got melanin!” Sis, SPF helps remove dark marks, age spots, it moisturizes, and helps with hyperpigmentation. It is a NEED in black folks morning routines, and THEE black-skincare-guru Felicia Walker has a highlight on why it’s a need in the black community on her Instagram. She also says unless you live in a cave, you don’t need it (9/10 you don’t). Aveeno doesn’t that “ashy” film, it’s moisturizing, oil free and sweat and water resistant.
AMBI Fade Cream- I’ve recently added this product to my regimen to help with my dark marks. I don’t have much feedback because I just started using it but word to Felicia Walker, it’s a go-to for dark marks. I’ll keep you posted!
Witch Hazel- (Not pictured) But Witch Hazel is a great toner for your regimen. It is soothing, an anti-inflammatory and helps treat acne! You can buy it locally at your pharmacy or grocery store.
There’s Effectiveness in Order!
I had no idea of the importance of the order to use skincare products for the best results. Thank God for Google! After reading up on this, here’s a “How-to” guide for you, even if you use different products!
#1. Cleanser: In my regimen, the first product to use is the Burt’s Bees Deep Cleansing Cream. You want to use this in the morning and at night daily. If I work makeup, I’ll swap out the cleansing cream for the Burt’s Bees Deep Pore Scrub.
#2. Toner: Witch Hazel! As I stated above, Witch Hazel is a perfect toner in your regimen. There are other toners that are just as good, but Witch Hazel is effective for your skin and your pockets (I got you girl!)
(If you’re trying out the Ambi Fade Cream, insert here. Otherwise, continue)
#3. Moisturizer: During the day, I use the Shea Moisture Balancing Moisturizer. At night and nighttime ONLY, is when I use the lemongrass oil (mixed with coconut oil). It’s important to only use the oil at night because this is when your skin does it’s thing and absorbs the essential oil to balance your natural oil. You don’t want to be greasy mami during the day honey!
#4. Sunscreen: After using your moisturizer, use about a pea size of Aveeno SPF and BOOM! This is only necessary for your daytime wash.
